Editorial review: August 2, 2026. Entry rules and application steps were checked against Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Migracion Colombia.
Searching for a Colombia eVisa can be confusing because the phrase is used for two different things. Colombia issues approved visas electronically, but that does not mean every traveler needs to apply for one. Your passport, reason for travel and intended length of stay determine whether you can enter as a short-stay visitor or must complete a visa application before traveling.
This guide explains the official online process without steering you toward a commercial visa website. It covers the Visitor (V) visa used for tourism, the documents that commonly cause delays, the two payment stages, and the separate Check-Mig travel form.
Quick answer: If your nationality is exempt from a short-stay visa and your trip fits the permitted visitor activities, you normally do not apply for a Colombia tourist visa in advance. If your nationality or travel purpose requires a visa, the application and supporting documents are submitted online through Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The approved document is sent as an electronic visa.
Is the Colombia eVisa a real visa?
Yes, although “Colombia eVisa” is informal search language rather than the name of one universal visa product. Colombia has three broad visa types: Visitor (V), Migrant (M) and Resident (R). Tourism is one category within the Visitor visa system.
The important distinction is between electronic delivery and visa eligibility. Colombia’s foreign ministry states that the study, processing and issuance of visas take place virtually. An approved visa is generally delivered electronically, while the authority can still request original documents or require a physical label in particular cases.
Do not buy an “eVisa” until you have checked whether you need a visa at all. Start with the foreign ministry’s current visa categories and nationality checker. Rules can change, and the passport you will actually use for the trip is what matters.
Who needs a Colombia visa for tourism?
There is no responsible one-line answer for every nationality. Colombia maintains lists of passports exempt from short-stay visas and passports that require a visa. There are also special provisions linked to residence permits or valid visas from certain countries, but those provisions have conditions and should never be assumed from an old blog post.
Use this sequence:
- Open the official nationality and visa-requirement page.
- Select tourism as the purpose of travel, not business, work, study or transit.
- Check the result against the passport you will present at the border.
- If a visa is required, open the exact Visitor visa category and read its current document list.
Visa-free admission is still an immigration decision made at the border. Carry a valid passport, proof of onward or return travel, a credible accommodation plan and evidence that you can support the trip. A short-stay admission does not authorize paid work.
How to apply for a Colombia visa online
1. Choose the correct Visitor visa category
Tourism, airport transit, business, study and digital-nomad activity are not interchangeable. Choosing a category because its documents look easier can lead to a request for more information, inadmission or refusal. A holiday with no work activity belongs under tourism; a longer or mixed-purpose stay may require a different route.
2. Prepare the general documents
The foreign ministry’s general instructions require a passport or equivalent travel document valid for at least six months when the application is made, in good condition and with free pages. Applicants upload a recent JPG photograph and a copy of the passport biographical page. The chosen category then adds its own evidence.
For a tourism application, the official category currently asks for a written explanation of the trip, evidence of financial means, health insurance for the intended stay, and a reservation showing entry to and departure from Colombia. An invitation changes the supporting-document route; it does not remove the need for a coherent application.
3. Handle foreign documents correctly
Supporting documents issued outside Colombia may need an apostille or legalization and an official Spanish translation. The ministry also states that most supporting documents, other than a valid passport or travel document, should have been issued no more than three months before the application is registered. Check the exceptions for your category before paying for translations.
4. Submit through the official visa portal
Complete the form only through the ministry’s official online visa application. If you are outside Colombia, select the Colombian consular office closest to your legal residence. If you are legally present in Colombia, the form provides the Bogota office option.
Upload readable PDF files and make sure names, passport numbers and dates agree across every document. A beautiful itinerary will not rescue an application with contradictory identity details.
5. Pay the study fee and monitor your email
Colombia separates the application-study fee from the visa-issuance fee. Paying the first fee does not guarantee approval and it is not refundable. The official instructions say the study payment must be completed within 10 calendar days after the reference number is generated, including applications whose tariff is zero.
Once the complete application and study payment are registered, the authority has up to 30 calendar days to issue a decision, although checks with other entities can extend that period. It may approve, request additional information, ask for the applicant’s presence, declare the application inadmissible or refuse it. Apply with breathing room rather than booking a non-refundable departure around the fastest possible outcome.
6. Pay for issuance and inspect the electronic visa
If approved, the issuance payment is a second step. The ministry currently gives 10 business days to make it, then sends the electronic visa to the email registered in the application. Check the spelling of your name, passport number, visa category and validity as soon as it arrives. The official correction window is limited.
Colombia tourist visa document checklist
The exact checklist shown for your nationality and category controls. As a practical preparation list, expect to organize:
- A passport valid for at least six months at the application date.
- A compliant recent digital photograph.
- A clear passport biographical-page scan.
- A signed letter explaining where you will go, why, for how long and who is paying.
- Recent bank evidence that matches the official financial requirement.
- Health insurance covering the planned stay.
- Entry and exit reservations.
- Accommodation details or the full invitation package, as applicable.
- Apostilles, legalization and official Spanish translations where required.
File names such as passport.pdf and six-month-bank-statements.pdf make a final review easier. Keep the original resolution and image quality high enough to read, then compress only to the portal’s limits.
Fees, processing time and common mistakes
Fees vary by visa category, applicant nationality and the office handling the application. Use the ministry’s current fees and payment page immediately before applying. A third-party page quoting one price may be omitting the study fee, using an old tariff or describing a different visa.
The mistakes most likely to waste time are ordinary ones:
- Applying for tourism when the real activity is work, study or business.
- Using an unofficial form or paying a site that resembles a government portal.
- Uploading statements or certificates that are too old.
- Leaving unexplained gaps between the itinerary, reservations and financial evidence.
- Ignoring a request for additional documents sent by email.
- Assuming that submitting an application extends legal stay inside Colombia.
Check-Mig is separate from the visa
Check-Mig is a Migracion Colombia pre-registration tool for travel information. It is not a visa application and it cannot turn a visa-required passenger into a visa-exempt one. Migracion Colombia describes the service as free and says the form can be completed from 72 hours until one hour before travel. The agency’s current service page also describes it as non-mandatory, while airlines or operational procedures may still ask travelers about it.
Use the official Check-Mig portal, not a paid look-alike. Complete it with the same passport and flight details you will present. Keep the confirmation accessible offline.
After approval: what to carry
Save the electronic visa in more than one place and carry a printed copy. Bring the passport connected to the application, onward or return evidence, accommodation details and the documents that explain your visit. A visa allows you to travel to the border; it does not remove the immigration officer’s authority to decide admission.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Colombia eVisa on arrival?
Do not plan around a visa on arrival. If your passport requires a visa for your purpose, complete the official process before travel and wait for the electronic visa. Visa-exempt travelers seek admission as visitors; that is different from receiving an eVisa at the airport.
Is the Colombia visa application completely online?
The normal study, processing and issuance workflow is virtual. However, the visa authority can request original documents or the applicant’s presence, and it may require a physical visa label in a particular case.
How long does a Colombia eVisa take?
The official general instructions allow up to 30 calendar days for a decision after a complete application and study payment, with longer processing possible when outside checks are needed. Approval is followed by the issuance-payment stage.
Is Check-Mig the same as a tourist visa?
No. Check-Mig is travel pre-registration managed by the immigration authority. Visa applications are managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through a different official system.
Can a commercial agency guarantee approval?
No. Colombia treats visa decisions as a discretionary state function. A competent professional may help organize documents, but nobody outside the authority can guarantee a visa or border admission.
